The most important room in the house

Published January 23, 2010

The most important room in the house is the kitchen. It seems like every floorplan has a new twist on a kitchen layout. The kitchen in an older house in Galveston before the grade raising was probably in the backyard next to the alley. When the grade raising came to your block the owner was required to bring the kitchen up to the back of the house. They seemed to have kept their diminutive size over the years.

Well, things have changed! The kitchen is where the action is. Home chefs now have their own TV network. Buyers know to keep the kitchen in mind when looking at houses. This is one room where Buyers open the drawers and cabinets. Take all the clutter, extra appliances and cleaning supplies and put them neatly in the garage. Clean under the sink. Small kitchens can look very attractive.

Many kitchens, in all ages of houses, now have breakfast rooms, dens, computer space, wet bars and laundry areas. Let your kitchen space tell you what it will accomodate. Be wary of redoing the kitchen in order to sell the house. You may get a Buyer that likes a neat and clean functional kitchen and may not need, or want to pay for, the bells and whistles of Julia Child.
