Preparing for a move

Published January 9, 2010

Moving can be stressful, but doesn’t have to be.

The first step in planning a smooth move is to create a checklist well in advance. If you are moving yourself, reserve that U-haul as soon as possible. If you plan to hire professional movers, it’s important to arrange that early, too. Waiting until the last minute limits your choice of dates and moving companies. You should also begin notifying friends, family and the post office of your new address.

Next, sort through your belongings and consider the move an opportunity to rid yourself of items you may no longer want or need. Hold a garage sale or donate items to your favorite charity. That may even help offset moving costs and simplify packing.

Proper packing is crucial to a good move. You can hire professional movers to pack; they typically accept liability for items damaged in the move, but read the contract closely. If you choose a moving company that is a member of the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA), you will likely have limited liability insurance on your belongings. Be aware that this only provides partial coverage.

Packing yourself will help save money, but make sure you pack well or insure your belongings. There are several options for insuring against possible loss or damage. Some homeowner’s insurance policies cover damage during a move, so check yours to be sure.

Most people move during the summer months, meaning professional movers are booked and typically charge premium rates then. Some movers offer lower prices between October and April. It may also be easier to schedule the company of your choice during the slow season.

Do your homework before choosing a mover. Get several estimates and never rely on those made over the phone or Internet. Request a written, binding estimate, which guarantees the cost of the move based on items to be moved and services listed on the mover’s estimate sheet.

Consult the Better Business Bureau about possible complaints against movers and don’t hesitate to ask questions. The movers are holding your life’s possessions in their hands, so make sure you’re comfortable with your decision.

Moving doesn’t have to be traumatic. With advance planning, you can enjoy a smooth transition, allowing yourself to bask in the joy of your new home. Please visit TexasRealEstate.com or HAR.com for more.
